Planning an international adventure is exciting, but before you start dreaming about exotic destinations and unforgettable experiences, there’s one crucial aspect you simply cannot overlook: your travel documents. Having the correct paperwork in order can mean the difference between a smooth departure and a stressful situation at the airport.
At Jenny’s Travel, we’ve helped countless South Africans embark on their dream holidays, and we know exactly what you need to travel with confidence. Here’s your comprehensive guide to the essential documents required for international travel from South Africa.
A quick note before we begin: entry rules change often, and the details below are a general guide rather than a guarantee. We always confirm the current requirements for your specific destination and circumstances at the time of booking.
1. Valid Passport
Your passport is your most important travel document. Here’s what you need to know:
- Validity: Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended return date
- Blank pages: Ensure you have at least two to four blank pages for entry stamps and visas
- Condition: Your passport must be in good condition with no damage to the photo page or cover
Top tip: If your passport is due to expire within the next year, consider renewing it before booking your trip.
2. Visas
Depending on your destination, you may need to obtain a visa before travelling. South African passport holders enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a number of countries, but many others require advance applications.
Popular destinations that require visas for South African passport holders include:
- United States of America
- United Kingdom
- European Union (Schengen Area)
- Australia
- Canada
- China
A note on the UK: the United Kingdom has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, but this is for visa-exempt nationalities only. South African passport holders are not visa-exempt, so they must still apply for a full UK visa in the usual way—the ETA does not apply to them.
Processing times vary, so apply well in advance—some visas can take several weeks or even months to process.
3. Travel Insurance Documents
Whilst not always mandatory, travel insurance is absolutely essential. Some destinations, including those in the Schengen Area, actually require proof of travel insurance as a condition of entry.
Your travel insurance should cover:
- Medical emergencies and evacuation
- Trip cancellation or interruption
- Lost or stolen luggage
- Personal liability
Keep both digital and printed copies of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers.

4. Flight Itinerary and Accommodation Confirmation
Immigration officials may ask for proof of:
- Return or onward flight tickets – demonstrating you intend to leave the country
- Accommodation bookings – showing where you’ll be staying
Having these documents readily accessible speeds up the immigration process considerably.
5. Proof of Sufficient Funds
Some countries require evidence that you can financially support yourself during your stay. This might include:
- Recent bank statements
- Credit card statements
- Proof of employment or income
- Sponsorship letters (if applicable)
6. Vaccination Certificates
Certain destinations require proof of specific vaccinations. The most common requirement is:
- Yellow Fever Certificate: Required when travelling to or from certain countries in Africa and South America where the disease is present. Whether you need one depends on your route, so always check the requirements for every country on your itinerary, including stopovers.
Health and vaccination requirements can change, so check the specific rules for your destination well in advance of your trip.
7. International Driving Permit (IDP)
If you’re planning to hire a car abroad, you’ll likely need an International Driving Permit alongside your valid South African driver’s licence. The Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa is the only authorised issuer of IDPs in the country. Apply before you depart—an IDP cannot be issued once you’ve already left South Africa, and your SA licence must be valid (not expired) to qualify.
8. Documents for Travelling with Children
South Africa’s rules for minors (under 18) travelling internationally have been easing in recent years, but they remain an area where it pays to check carefully before you fly, as the requirements differ depending on the situation.
The key points as things currently stand:
- For some time, the strict requirement to always carry an unabridged birth certificate has been relaxed, and the Department of Home Affairs has been moving to phase it out for parents travelling with their children. As part of this modernisation, South African children’s passports are increasingly issued with the parents’ details included, which removes the need for a separate certificate. But if your child is travelling with a passport without the parent’s details, they should STILL travel with the unabridged birth certificate.
- Consent remains important. Where a child travels with only one parent, or with a guardian or another adult, a parental consent affidavit (and, where relevant, supporting documents such as a court order or a deceased parent’s death certificate) may still be required.
- Requirements can differ for children travelling on South African passports versus foreign passports, and individual airlines may still ask for supporting documents in line with their own policies.
Because this area is in transition and the practical requirements can vary by airline and route, we strongly recommend confirming exactly what your child will need for your specific trip. We’re happy to check this for you as part of your booking.
9. Copies and Digital Backups
Always prepare:
- Photocopies of all important documents are kept separately from the originals
- Digital copies stored securely in cloud storage or email
- Emergency contact information for South African embassies and consulates at your destination

Final Checklist Before You Fly
- Passport (valid for 6+ months)
- Visas (if required)
- Travel insurance documentation
- Flight and accommodation confirmations
- Vaccination certificates (if required for your route)
- Consent affidavit and supporting documents for children (where applicable)
- Copies of all documents
